During the second world war Japanese Canadians that were born here and some that were citizens were seen as spies. As a result of a War Measures Act this gave unlimited power to the Canadian government which took away their civil rights. But in 1988 there was a settlement. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney signed The Japanese Canadian Redress agreement and offered an apology. The government paid each Japanese Canadian that was held in a internment camp $21,000 for the lost of property. In addition the government paid $14 million for Japanese Canadians community for education, social, cultural programs. They also set up a new Canadian race relation foundation to fight racism and also to promote harmony with the Canadian ethnic communities too.
